Bat Mitzvah & Bar Mitzvah Vs. Confirmation
Reform Perspective by Rivka C. Berman

Early Reform congregations did not celebrate bar or bat mitzvahs.  Rather, the Confirmation, a ceremony adapted from the Protestant tradition, was chosen as a rite of passage instead.

Today, both bar/bat mitzvah and confirmations are celebrated because they mark different stages. The bat and bar mitzvah highlights a child’s new personal status. The Confirmation, experienced as a class, emphasizes a Jew’s place in the community.

Studying for the two takes separate routes. Hebrew reading and synagogue ritual take up a lot of bar mitzvah training. Intellectual exploration of what it means to be a Jew is usually the focus of the Confirmation.
